Taking a Sip of Equalitea

It’s 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7 and Cyber Café is even more lively than usual. Students stand in clusters as they catch up with friends between classes.

The smell of coffee is even stronger than usual. Staff members greet each other with smiles and hugs as they sit down at a table at the bottom of the stairs. The table is leading to the library, where the Office of Justice Equity has set up a table full of food and drinks.

This can only mean one thing. Their Equalitea event is in full swing.

The event is a way for the office of Justice Equity and Inclusion to let students know about the organization’s presence on campus, according to Emma Schmidt-Swartz, a graduate recruiter and one of the event organizers.

Other coworkers pitched in,

“We are gathering today to try and build a sense of community at Dominican,” said Aracelis Marie Sanchez, the chair of the staff inclusion committee, which was helping to put on this event.

The event also aims to educate students about campus events celebrating Black History month, according to Schmidt-Swartz. Posters and flyers are lined up on the table for students to look at as they grab a cup of tea in between classes.

Student Carlie Merola enjoyed stopping by the tea.

“The group of people was really welcoming and the spot where they were set up was really well located,” she said. “It was a great way to spread the message about different events happening on campus in a fun way.”
