With regards to the Dominican Star article titled, “Healthy Eating in the Dining Hall” from 2022, I would like to address that there has still been a lack of better options implemented in the Dining Hall & Crown Café. If students are meant to be attentive and ready to learn during days of demanding classes, then we need to have better options & access to one of the most important parts of being prepared for class: eating a good meal.

As a student that lives on campus & relies on the Dining Hall and Crown Café to provide me with all my meals, I feel that the price paid for food doesn’t match the quality and variety needed to remain engaged in the day of classes. Throughout the past year, they have lessened DU to go options and hours, along with lacking alternatives for dietary restrictions. Many studies show that students with better eating habits and healthier meals on campus tend to have not only better academic success, but also concentration & alertness (Mathunjwa et al. 2024). When good food equals academic success, it’s unfair to expect students to purchase their own food on top of meal costs if the food doesn’t meet their needs.

Nothing will change if students don’t act; our learning relies on a basic human need. I urge the dining hall to collaborate with students to find food options that are reliable and affordable to create academic success. Until then, fill out the dining hall survey they provide whenever you eat there. Help make the voices of students heard about our learning and our food – help us thrive.

Sincerely,
