Letter to the Editor

My name is Dalilah Salgado; our education system is in a pickle as of right now. According to Claire Cain Miller, Francesca Paris, and Sarah Mervosh,

“Almost everywhere in America, students are performing worse than their peers were 10 years ago” (Miller, Paris, Mervosh, 2026).

Hearing from teachers now and those who have quit, many of them admit that students are ruder, do not understand material, and aren’t being properly punished for certain behavior.  

I have an issue with how education is currently being led, as a college student; I’ve heard multiple stories of students using AI to pass online classes or assignments. Instead of reading the materials a professor has assigned, students choose to use AI to cheat through the class. Not realizing that AI is most times incorrect, colleges offer resources for students to get help with academics like tutoring support; instead, students choose the “easier” route. This affects high school and elementary school as well. With AI and electronics becoming common in our education system, it’s increasingly difficult to have students pay attention or even behave. 

I believe we should have proper consequences for students who misbehave, use AI, and instead of the typical punishment like detention, or suspension, we should be giving resources to properly address students’ behavior. Most public high schools or elementary schools aren’t given much funding to help students get proper materials to help them learn. With parent-teacher conferences being a way that parents can learn what their students are up to, we should instead host monthly meetings where parents would come in and properly address problems from home, behavior and what the school and themselves could do to help their students succeed. 

I believe everyone deserves education, to have proper resources for our students, students often feel alone, and feel as if no one cares so why should they; and that’s why we should have proper resources to help not only parents, and teachers; but our students because they are our future and we should help as much as we can.
