On March 12, Dominican students cheered loudly for the university’s men’s volleyball team at the Igini Sports Forum.

The forum was packed with an audience of 775 as many students watched Dominican take on Benedictine University’s team.

As the gym’s lights dimmed, the players’ introductions began as each player walked through blue smoke.  When the first ball was served, the game kicked off.

Students were dressed in golden Dominican t-shirts as the sections filled from top to bottom.

They also made their own signs to hold up during the game.  One sign was labeled “Meaty Claws” while another featured a butterfingers inspired drawing.

With both team going back and forth, it was a close game, but Dominican’s team took a demanding 2-0 lead.

As the game became more tense, the referee stepped in and issued a blue card to players from both teams for taunting after great plays.

Dominican and Benedictine both fought to win as junior Casey Goss led the Stars in kills with a tremendous game.

If the Stars achieved 30 kills throughout the game, students would receive a free promotional meal from Raising Canes.

However, with the tide slowly shifting to Benedictine, they ended both sets with a repeated score of 25-19.

With huge season implications on the line, the series was tied into two sets a piece.

The clash between the two undefeated teams resulted in a narrow record of 6-4 for Dominican.

As the final set began, students anxiously waited for the first serve.  It started to look like a win for Dominican, but the Stars suddenly found themselves fighting to avoid a reverse sweep.

Benedictine’s presence on the net was key to fighting back and tying the series.  Their team began to silence the crowd as they ran away with the lead.

With an unexpected rotation error from Dominican in the closing stages of the game, Benedictine closed the game with a 3-2 win.  Players, coaches, and traveling fans stormed the court in celebration.

The Stars earned a final set score of 3-2, which fell to a 5-1 conference record. Follow Dominican Athletics website for dates on upcoming games.
