A Discussion with Liz Oliva Fernández

Liz Oliva Fernández

By: Betsy Carreño

Liz Oliva Fernández, a Cuban filmmaker and journalist, came to Dominican on Oct. 24 to talk about the U.S. sanction in Cuba and present her documentary The War on Cuba to guests.

The documentary concentrates on how the impact of the U.S. sanctions in Cuba has affected the community.

During the discussion, Fernández stated: “The solution is not Cuba touring around other countries.  I think that we are capable people because we have resources to try to be our own country and economy.”

Fernández will continue touring throughout the United States to bring a new perspective to the affects the sanctions have had on Cuba.

When asked what mindset she wanted society to listen to her discussions, she explained: “Yo creo que con ganas de aprender algo nuevo, y luego de escuchar una perspectiva que evidentemente no es la perspectiva que van a escuchar en los grandes medios de communicación.”

“I think with the desire to learn something new, and to listen to a new perspective that evidently won’t be the perspective that they will hear in mainstream media.”

While Fernández is creating more awareness to this subject, she is also creating changes in more ways than one.

“Estoy viniendo a Estados Unidos. Nunca se ve una periodista de Lationamérica que viene a trabajar a Estados Unidos, y a contarle a la gente cuál es la causa detrás de la realidad que se vive en Cuba,” she said.

“I am coming to the United States. You never see a journalist from Latin America that comes to work in the United States and talks to the people about what is the cause behind the truth that is lived in Cuba.”
