(G)URSCI & Experiential Learning Expo to be Held Online

By: Andrew Mariotti

Last spring, Dominican’s live showcase for student research had to move suddenly online.

This year, the (G)URSCI and Experiential Learning Expo will also be online, but organizers have learned a great deal in the intervening year.

“We now have a much better idea for how to set up the meeting, what kind of information to disseminate to presenters and attendees, and how long it takes to set things up properly,” said Marion Weedermann, Director of (G)URSCI and professor of mathematics.

Students who wish to present at the expo will need to submit an application by February 28. Faculty members listed as mentors will be notified when students submit their application, so they can carefully review and approve it. Students can submit their application by clicking here.

Students participating can present their work through poster, oral, or panel presentations.

Students will make an electronic poster using a template from Dominican University’s Office Services. Students will have one hour to present their poster and answer questions.

Students will give prerecorded or live oral presentations. Students with prerecorded presentations will have one hour to discuss via a discussion board, while people with live presentations will have 15-20 minutes to present.

Students on the panel will discuss a specific topic or experience. Students will be on an online panel, which will be one hour.

All electronic posters and prerecorded presentations must be submitted by April 5 at noon.

The expo had been a live, in-person event for years. Some students said that last year’s online venue let them see more research presentations via Zoom, and even go back and re-watch recorded presentations.

Weedermann, however, said there is something special about an in-person event.

“Usually, the community of presenters generates so much energy and it is very hard to reproduce energy,” she said.

(G)URSCI will take place on April 7 through Zoom to showcase students’ best work.

The “G” added in front of URSCI means that graduates can present at the event. The event has also been renamed from “Expo & Global Learning Symposium” to “Experiential Learning Expo” which reflects the many different ways our students engage with the world.
