Getting to Know Sara Furlette-Koski

In Power 027, just outside the gym at Dominican University, sits an athletic training room where many athletes go to treat their aches and pains. This room is overseen by the Head Athletic Trainer, Sara Furlette-Koski. With a Master of Health/Physical Education, Sara has been an athletic trainer for almost two decades now. She is held in high regards throughout the athletic community here at Dominican, but athletics isn’t anything new to her.

Furlette-Koski played volleyball, softball, and basketball in high school. Although her favorite sport to play was basketball, her true talents were in softball. At the age of 11, she was on the Keizer All-Star team in Oregon, where she played her way to the Little League World Series. Her team ended up placing third best in the world, only losing to the team who won it all. This would lead to a life full of athletics; however, she’s more than just an athlete.

Sara has been married for five years to her wife Missy, who gave birth eight weeks ago to twin babies, Joel and Jessa. She’s currently obtaining a degree in social work here at Dominican and plans on graduating in May. She also has an internship through Dominican at the Student Success and Engagement division.

Her passion is helping students stay in college. “Getting into college is one thing, but staying in it can be difficult for many people,” she said. Balancing life, school, a job, and family are very difficult for young adults, so I want to help support those who need it.”

I asked her if she wanted to say anything else before I left her office. Instead of boasting about her accolades or giving a philosophical life tip, she simply said, “I’m a proud wife and a proud mother.”
