Fine Arts Tunnel Closing Brings Frustration to Dominican

Dominican has closed indefinitely the tunnel linking the Fine Arts Building to Lewis Hall because of the ongoing flooding problems says Director of Campus Safety, Sasha Santiago.

The University attempted to fix the problem in January, but durable repairs would have been too expensive for the university – in the price range of $700,000, according to Santiago. However, the university has other, more pressing maintenance jobs, she said.

Students who have used the tunnel for an easy shortcut, especially during bad weather, were unhappy about the closure.

“I believe the school is doing a disservice to the students and faculty that make great use of the tunnel for all its benefits,” said transfer student Sandra Kozel.

Longtime faculty have noted that the tunnel has had water seepage problems for decades.

Santiago said she understands the frustration and insists it was important students know the reason for the tunnel closing.
