Dominican Welcomes BLM Co-Founder Ayo Tometi

Ayọ Tometi, activist and co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Movement, is set to deliver a keynote address at Dominican in honor of Black History Month.   

The event will be held on Feb 6. in the Lund Auditorium from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. 

Tometi, who has Nigerian ancestry, has spent years fighting for social and economic justice for African Americans.  

For eight years, she served as the executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, an institution “formed to bring Black voices together to advocate for equality and justice in our laws and our communities.” 

Dr. Sophia Duffy, moderator of the keynote and associate professor of psychology, said she believes Tometi’s visit is a great opportunity for Dominican and encourages students and faculty to show their support. 

Tometi’s address will be hosted by several university organizations including the Office of Justice, Equity, and Inclusion, Office of Student Involvement.

The three organizations have planned this event in honor of Black History Month, a time devoted to highlighting and celebrating the work and struggles of African Americans across generations.  

Figures like Dr. King, and Rosa Parks, among others are celebrated for their accomplishments throughout the month.
