The Most ICPA Awards Won in History for DU

The Dominican Star staff was awarded a record 11 awards in the annual Illinois College Press Association (ICPA) Contest in February, the most the newspaper has won since it was a member.   

The contest was broken down into three divisions, decided by the school size. Dominican University was in the small school division in the undergraduate enrollment of fewer than 3,000 students. There are 13 active ICPA members in that division. The other two divisions are for medium-sized schools (3,000-6,999) and large schools (7,000+).  

The ICPA Awards Luncheon announced the Dominican Star winning 11 awards in total. The awards can either be won as the whole newspaper staff or as an individual. This is the most the Dominican Star has won in history. The awards that were given to the staff were:   

The staff won third place in general excellence for both the print version of the newspaper and the web site. Individual staff members also brought home honors, including: 

2nd place – News Story, “Black Professor Assaulted While Leading Diversity Workshop” – Azhley Rodriguez

2nd place – Sports News Story, “Athletics Announces Stunt team, Starlettes Unhappy” – Chelsea Zhao  

3rd place – Headline Writing, “DU Dreamers Go to DC to Support DACA” – Azhley Rodriguez  

3rd place – Opinion Pages – “Letter From the Editor” and “DU Freshmen Spill the Beans” – Bianca Dinkha and Azhley Rodriguez  

3rd place – Sports Photo, “Volleyball Team Makes History” – Azhley Rodriguez  

Honorable Mention – Feature Photo, “Archway” – Arleth Arana

ICPA was founded at its first convention at Eastern Illinois University on April 8-9, 1983. The ICPA contest is open to any four-year college in Illinois.
