As many Dominican students begin to prepare for careers post-college, students share their own experiences with their career search journey and assistance given by Dominican.

Pre-Nursing major, Isaly Beaudion faces some concerns about securing a job after graduation. She expressed that her worries were due to stigmas surrounding new graduates entering the nursing world. Some of those stigmas being lack knowledge and skill. However, she believes that she is prepared to take on a role.

“Skills and knowledge wise, I would say I’m pretty set,” she said. ” But actually, securing the job is what gives me anxiety.”

Another concern became balancing schoolwork and exploring career options.

“Recently, I’ve taken a look at starting a nurse externship which helps student nurses build confidence, connect real life scenarios, and potentially secure a job offer after completion of their BSN,” she said. “But in all honesty, I’m not currently doing anything to ensure that. Unfortunately, nursing school is very time consuming, especially when you have more rigorous courses.“

Despite these challenges, Beaudion has found support through the nursing program that offers guidance from advisors and lecturers.

“The program’s faculty wants everyone to succeed and be great, and they do everything in their power to make sure that’s plausible while offering us supplemental resources to further excel in our pathways,” she said.

Jaylynn Marin, a senior business management major, also shared her support from resources like the Career Center.

“I have gained so much insight about the corporate world, who I should be speaking to, and what I should prioritize, thanks to all the advisors in the career center that I have met with,” she said. “Receiving help with my resume, getting personally connected at the career fair, and receiving help with internship and job leads, I feel have placed me steps ahead of where I thought I would be at this point in my job search, so I am very thankful for the advisors at Dominican.“

Since coming into Dominican, Marin has noticed a significant difference in how prepared she is with job searching.

“I have a much clearer picture of the kind of roles I should be searching for, what long term and short goals I have, and the career path I should take to achieve those goals,” she said. “I feel that I have gained the skills.“

One thing she makes sure to prioritize in her career search journey is networking.

“I have found a lot of opportunities in meeting people and creating connections. I am sending applications as well, and messaging recruiters,” she said.

Marin has previously been able to secure an internship with Enterprise Mobility through LinkedIn connections. Since then, she has applied for other jobs and recoffers from several companies.

As Beaudion and Marin explore their career options in their final year at Dominican, they share advice they would give their freshman year self.

“Start now. Get your toes dipped in, whether it’s something you want to do the rest of your life or not, experience is experience. Take every opportunity to talk, ask questions, and network.” Beaudion said.

“Do as many internships as I possibly could. I learned so much about my career path, the corporate world, and myself during my summer internship, and I am sure that I would have gained a lot more from the experience of many others,” Marin said.
