Every fall, October rolls around and a sudden flash of pink emerges in the most interesting of places: the grocery store, NFL football games, first responders’ uniforms, and specialty pastries at Dunkin Donuts. If you weren’t already familiar with breast cancer, this newfound emergence of this color pushes awareness of this illness into your mind. As wonderful as it is to support research and treatment on a global scale, how much do you know about your own personal breast cancer risk (and yes, this applies to males as well!)?
Once a month
Commit to a self-exam!
Take 5 minutes in the shower, lying down, or in front of the mirror
Observe for: swelling, irritation, or abnormal discharge
Be your own examiner! Use the pads of your fingers and move in a circular or vertical pattern
Evaluate for any lumps, masses, or nipple changes
Report any changes to your healthcare provider—YOU are worth taking the time to investigate any abnormal findings!
