The Dominican University golf team gears up to bloom into its spring season with senior Tyler Stibal leading the way.
The swinging Stars start their spring season off with a competitive play on April 6. Practice begins on March 20.
Stibal, a senior, comes off an impressive fall campaign averaging 79.6 strokes per match. The notable stat led to a strong Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference outing where he finished tied for 10th place in the entire tournament after shooting a 78 on day one, and a 79 on day two.
Individual work ethics are established and needed for the golf team, as there is a split between the season. The first half of the season occurs between September and October. After time off, the spring season starts in March and ends at the end of April.
“[The golf team] has a lot of freedom to work in what we feel needs the most work,” he said. “We might have days tailored to short game or putting, but we use the time as we see fit.”
Stibal, with his eyes set down course, is excited to ride out with his seven teammates to end cap the year and his career here at Dominican.
The team consists of eight golfers with Stibal leading the way. Jimmy Cerven, Michael Mindykowski, Sebastian Rennell, Tyler Van Es, Jared Bandi, Nick Sierra and Marco Diaz complete the roster.
Weather is an important aspect of deciding the spring golf season. With the season being short, the weather takes a toll play as it did last year when Stibal said “cold temperatures, hail and all-around miserable weather had an effect.”
Coach Mark White, also the men’s basketball coach, continues his ninth year of coaching the golf team with high hopes.
“I’m very excited for the spring season,” he said. “Presently, we are five strokes ahead of Lakeland University and within 11 strokes of both Marian University and Concordia University-Wisconsin in the NACC Tournament Standings.”
“With two conference tournament rounds remaining, our team goal is to maintain our lead over Lakeland University and catch the two teams directly ahead of us,” White said.
