Curtain Call, a new theater club at Dominican, is now open for all students interested in learning about theater and art.

The club currently has 15 members and allows students to participate in various productions, attend artist seminars, and play fun theater games.

Vice President Carlie Merola said that she and the club’s president, Katy Agans, started planning a theater club in fall 2022.

“Because me and Katy are seniors, we took the leadership,” said Merola. “There used to be a theater club called Curtain Call and we’re trying to bring it back.”

The theater club will feature workshops for students to participate in playwrighting, acting and costume designing.

“We’re hoping to bring in guest lecturers,” said Merola. “We also want to take field trips to see different plays and musicals.”

Due to a lack of students in Bob Ross’ Happy Accidents, an improv comedy club, Curtain Call, will feature more improv activities.

Merola believes this new club can help students become more involved with theater and production.

“A lot of people don’t know that we have a theater major,” said Merola. “We want the club to help expose people to this side of Dominican. It is not talked about real often.”

She also said that the main lesson of the theater club is to gain confidence while performing on stage.

“We learned not to be afraid to be ourselves in front of people,” Merola said. “We want to spread that to other people.”

Advisor Melanie Thompson said theatre allows students to engage in interesting conversations.

“It’s a beautiful way to express emotions and thoughts and conjecture on the happenings of the world from a personal level to those on a global scale,” said Thompson. “It’s also an incredible way to engage your community and to further your empathy journey.”

Rachel Esser, a sophomore, said she is excited to learn about the different aspects of theater and meeting new classmates.

“It’s a very welcoming environment for students looking to explore new opportunities,” said Esser. “Curtain Call offers a really easy way to get involved without the commitment of declaring a major.”

Curtain Call will meet twice a month in room 114 of the Fine Arts Building. The first meeting was held on April 4, and the next meeting is on April 25.
