On March 12, Dominican hosted Benedictine University in a crucial NACC conference game.
Before the game kicked off, the Star sat down with Coach Douglas Burchett to discuss the men’s volleyball season as well as the anticipation of the game against Benedictine.
He praised the team’s hard work during the tough games early in the season, that projected Dominican into a 6-game winning streak before the Benedictine game.
Burchett said Benedictine and Dominican were the two teams that have been competing for the NACC regular reason title for a long time but believes Dominican has built a reputation for winning.
“There is a storied past that championships have been [a] part of,” he explained. “We appreciate it, but each season [has] a unique storyline. Championships are not [always] guaranteed.”
Burchett also said he wants all the team players to embrace the moments of playing volleyball.
“Let it soak in and appreciate the moment we have tonight,” he said. “[However], we have to go out and play volleyball.”
After the Stars loss to Benedictine, Burchett looked back on the results with some positive takeaways.
“This was one of the coolest environments I have ever been a part of in my ten years at Dominican,” he said. “It was amazing to see so many students and fans filling up the gym an hour before match time in their gold t-shirts. The student, faculty, and fan support created an amazing atmosphere.”
He acknowledged that the Stars made some mistakes that allowed Benedictine back into the game but believes there were plenty of learning moments in the loss.
“We are a great team that just has to work out a couple of kinks and how to close out matches when we are up,” Burchett said. “I’m excited for a strong finish!”
