Dominican Star staff attended the annual Illinois College Press Association (ICPA) Convention from March 18-19 in downtown Chicago.
Among the 17 entries, the Star staff was awarded second place for Front Page Layout and second place for general excellence in print for 2022 in the Non-Dailies under 4,000 student enrollment category.
The Star received one honorable mention for front page layout, an honorable mention for former Editor Thomas Gibbons’s podcast, and an honorable mention for Ximena Pena’s Front Page Layout in the Non-Dailies category in 2021.
The ICPA received 769 entries from 27 competing schools, including seven daily newspapers, 11 non-dailies over 4,000, and nine non-dailies under 4,000.
The non-dailies under 4,000, the category the Star belongs to, received 169 entries.
This year marks the first in-person award ceremony since 2019. The date for the event was delayed from February to March 18-19 due to COVID.
The ICPA Convention also hosted speakers and panels for both days. The Star staff learned about search engine optimization, camera setup tips, critical thinking, ethics and competing for jobs in the journalism market.
