Dominican University Golf is the smallest official team as well as quite possibly the smallest collegiate golf team in the country at a staggering four rostered players. Sophomore Captain Luka Stundins leads the group of fellow sophomore Clay Austin and two freshman, Gabriel Alcala and Logan Hamilton.
The team originally expected to roster seven players for the 2025-2026 fall season however, three players unexpectedly transferred out. Despite the lack of numbers, the four athletes came to appreciate the relationship they were able to build together and the opportunity to build the future of golf at Dominican.
Hamilton says, “As a freshman I kind of just looked at it as like a start, a fresh start for a collegiate golf team.”
Stundins adds to the comment, “We kind of build the team. We are the four.”
The fall season didn’t go as well as the four may have hoped finishing near bottom of the table in all invites and matches, “In golf it’s hard to put everything together at once. One part of your game comes as another leaves. We showed flashes of what our potential is. We can all score pretty well,” Stundins says.
Despite the rough season the mindset of the team remains very high as well as their morale. Hamilton says, “Golf is a mindset, it’s all a mindset. If you have a bad mindset, you usually won’t do well, you might go into it with a great mindset and then by hole eight shoot a double bogey, get mad at yourself. Then the next hole you could do the same thing just because [of] your mindset.”
With the season having wrapped up recently with an unfortunate Did Not Place (DNP) at the NACC invite, the team looks on to preparing for the spring season and the future of Men’s Golf at Dominican.
“The oldest two players are sophomores, the other two are freshman. So to have a pretty young team, we’re always going to improve and in golf you can only get better. The improvements will come. It just might take time,” Hamilton says.
The lack of success in the fall fails to deter this small and tight knit four of golfers for Dominican. The Stars look to improve immensely in the spring season and as the years go on.
