Dominican University hosted its Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Investigations (URSCI) Expo and Global Learning Symposium on April 4.
Parmer Hall flooded with people on a Wednesday to browse the different research projects conducted by roughly 250 students.
URSCI was organized by Professor of Math and Program Director of Engineering, Marion Weederman and Executive Director of the Academic Enrichment Center, Paul Simpson.
According to Weederman, the goal of URSCI is to get students involved in academic work beyond the classroom. The students put in a lot of work for their research projects. Some of them taking 1 to 2 years of extensive work and studying, according to Weederman.
According to the 2018 URSCI Expo and Global Learning Symposium Program, some of those projects included Psychology (The Cities Mentor Project: An intervention to reduce negative psychological outcomes in urban youth), Economics (Examining the Gender Wage Gap: A Comparison of Earnings within Occupational Groups), and Chemistry (Molecular Dynamics Study of the Photodissociation of ICN in Ethanol).
According to the Dominican website, “These presentations have been gathered from students who have received Undergraduate Research Support Awards, gained funding as Summer Scholars, completed Degree with Distinction Projects in the Honors Program, or have received faculty support and notice for other strong academic work.”
Weederman encourages students to get involved with URSCI, saying that all a students needs is a question, a want to investigate it, and to be persistent.
