ShopDU Helps Graphic Design Student Open Business

By Bianca Dinkha

What started as an artistic passion for senior Chris Rice, later became a creative independent business with unique services in graphic design.

Rice’s business is featured in ShopDU, the one-stop-shop referral platform that highlights student and alumni-owned businesses.

ShopDU is currently promoting 62 businesses with the goal of reaching 100, says Bianca Beteta, assistant director of internships and externships.

“People are more aware of the businesses that are out there,” she said. “I think it is also really important for students, [who] are considering doing something within entrepreneurship, to see that it is possible.”

Beteta emphasized the necessity of spreading the word and how their membership has grown through various methods of involvement. They frequently distribute flyers, host tables, arrange class visits, and receive assistance from marketing interns.

“We’re tapping into these different student groups, so that is something we are really excited about,” Beteta said. “Getting deeply involved in the community has been our number one source of growth.”

The platform highlights a wide range of businesses, from selling desserts and floral arrangements to offering art and creative services.

Rice, a graphic design major, runs his own graphic design business that specializes in developing appealing graphics and content for clients. His vibrant and dynamic sports-themed designs set him apart as an independent graphic designer.

“I love to work in the world of sports,” Rice said. “I have been designing around sports since I was a teenager and stuck with it ever since. I’ve always been focused on growing as a designer.”

ShopDU has also helped Rice’s business grow and improve client involvement, keeping him active throughout the week.

“Since being featured on ShopDU, my business has slightly increased engagement around campus,” he said. “I am busy in the mornings, during the weekdays and on the weekends.”

“While ShopDU is still on the come up,” Rice continued. “It has not only been helpful to me and my peers, but to the community around Dominican who are looking for others to collaborate with.”

You may submit your own personal business to ShopDU and help them accomplish their goal of reaching 100 businesses!
