The DU Basketball team kicked off their season by hosting the annual Midnight Madness event in the gym.
The event was open for students, friends, and their families.
Upon arrival, all guests were offered a raffle ticket to win some cool DU merch. The options were from three different sports team apparel including: shirts, hats, shorts and beanies.
The first hour and a half was dedicated to the community shootout contest. The shootouts generated winners as the raffle winners were selected at the same time. The shootouts were separated between men and women as well as by the three-point and free throw position. The student winners — one for the women and one for the men – then went head-to-head on a free throw shootout.
Both the women’s and the men’s basketball teams were presented individually to the attendees. Attendees got to see some of the skills that they are bringing to their season in their free throw shootout.
Both teams are ready to bring some heat this 2021-22 basketball season. Gavin Richardson, a junior on the men’s basketball team, says he is “excited to see where the team chemistry takes us, not only with the men’s but with the women’s program too.”
As part of entertainment for the night, attendees got to see a pizza crawl between two students in the crowd as well as a dance preview performed by Dominican’s Starlettes.
Ashley Rivera, a junior on the women’s basketball team, told us that this event is a “really good opportunity to build team effort and a way for the sports team to connect with the rest of the students to build community.”
The athletes wrapped up the night by playing an inter-squad scrimmage game. About 185 students attended the event.
The men’s basketball team will face Principia College on Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. at home. The women’s basketball team’s first home game is Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. against Elmhurst University.
