The Women in Business club had their first general meeting this semester to inform interested Dominican students about their mission and different events and opportunities they host.
President of Women in Business Jocelyn Ramirez led the meeting with a presentation showcasing what they do in WIB, which includes bringing guest speakers to campus; impactful community service, hosting workshops, and of course group activities all with an aim to foster personal growth.
“I feel…as women coming together it allowed me to find this community here at Women in Business. I gained empowerment and I gained confidence.” Ramirez explained. She took on the role as President of the club after joining WIB in her sophomore year.
During the meeting about 15 students took part in socializing, a heated game of Kahoot, Chick Fila, and learning a bit more about WIB and the members who keep it running. Ramirez shared they had a “girl’s night” event with FeminStem+, a vision board workshop, and planned a Galentine’s Clay & Cafe Creations event for the month of February.
“…we wanted to have a valentine’s celebration for those girls who don’t have a valentine but still want to celebrate. We wanted to have hot chocolate, create networking connections…and makeclay creations. We know a lot of us girlies love to make clay creations…”
When it comes to the events Ramirez listed, WIB often partners with ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals for America). Ramirez also is the Marketing Director for ALPFA, “I also joined it the end of my sophomore year…we got to meet a lot of people in the business world, we got to go to networking events…” She went on further to share ALPFA went to Vegas this past summer to meet a lot of industries. “Meeting other people from other states and other countries…that was a big motivational boost.”
“We (WIB) do a lot of networking building with them, LinkedIn workshops, they’re our favorite when it comes to collabing.” Ramirez stated.
“I wanted to surround myself with girls around my major and get a little out of my comfort zone. I am a bit shy…so I am trying to put myself out there more and now that I am part of the board I hope I learn how to network more and chase more opportunities in the future.” Marisol Ramos, the event coordinator for WIB, shared.
Ramirez ended our sit down with explaining Women in Business is meant to be a safe space. “…we want to be inclusive to everyone despite our images being women, despite majors, despite sexual orientation, it doesn’tmatter because if it helps you, then it’ll probably help anybody else.
