Four seniors showed off their creative and stunning clothing collections to audience members at Dominican’s 2024 fashion show, Perspective in the Details.
The show ran from April 12 to 13 as the theme represented harmony and tranquility as well as understanding generations, interactions, and relationships.
Selleria Veneta, an Italian luxury brand, was featured as this year’s guest designer. Several models walked the runway holding colorful handbags custom-made by different Italian leather artisans.
McKinley Johnson, discipline director and professor of fashion design, said it takes the designers a year to make the garments for their collections.
“When it comes to the actual show itself, it takes a semester, but prior to the spring semester, we are planning it live,” he explained. “I am looking to see creativity and fashion. I want [audiences] to see that [students] are getting a good education.”
Johnson said he appreciates the hard work and determination from all the students working on the show.
“They have a lot under their belts,” he said. “It takes a lot to put all of this together. [When] people come and see it, they can be impressed and amazed.”
Senior Azulo D. Cazares’ collection “Alchmy Blue” exemplifies masculine power through the importance on shape and structure. The various shapes and silhouettes in his work were inspired by 80s anime like “Akira.”
“I feel a sense of relief to finally share what I have been working on for the past year,” he explained. “I want to create the things that I do not see [in fashion], so I want to fill that void that is out there.”
Cazares believes people should learn more about fashion because it has become influential in society.
“It is a part of our lives,” he said. “If you’re able to educate yourself about it, you can different styles that people have never seen before.”
Senior Mia Hitterman’s collection “Serene Monuments” combines both fashion and Chinese culture with various avant-garde elements.
“As a Chinese adoptee, I have always been curious about my culture,” she said. “I wanted to capture the essence of nature and the beauty of architecture.”
Hitterman said attending Dominican has helped her explore different fashion careers.
“When I came to Dominican as a freshman, that was a very unpredictable time because of the pandemic,” she said. “Now, as a senior, I can say that Dominican has been my foundation to be where I am now.”
Other senior collections included “Rare Variegation” by Jacey Staples, which embodies women’s fashion, and “Transit Opulence” by Brianna Yanga, which symbolizes individuality.
Sophomore Nathaly Cervantes felt nervous walking down the runway but loved participating in her second fashion show.
“Fashion allows me to express myself in a creative form,” she said. “Apart from being a business major, fashion has been one of my hobbies ever since I was a kid. This was a really fun experience.”
Cervantes said she hopes to partake in next year’s fashion show.
“Always be yourself and don’t pay attention to what [others] have to say,” she explained. “Fashion truly [lets] you be [who you are].”
