As the end of the semester approaches, seniors are preparing for graduation as they study for finals, order their regalia, and sign up for end-of-the-year celebrations.

During these busy times, one group on campus is making great efforts to support their peers by providing gifts and useful information approaching commencement.

The Senior Class Gift Committee is a group of students and staff that raises funds for scholarships, unrestricted funds, DU Feeds, and other related areas.

Mariana Garcia, assistant director of annual giving, detailed some of the committee’s work.

“We have monthly table meetings,” Garcia said. “We set out plans and dates for what we want to put out and accomplish. We work with ambassadors and other campus partners, specifically Student of Involvement. Communication is vital.”

These meetings can include the selection of prizes for games and raffles, t-shirt design ideas, and graduation information.

The act of giving is a main focus point of the committee.  Students’ contributions to the committee go towards Dominican funds, DU Feeds or scholarships.

Joanna Skubish, director of annual giving, said she thinks it is important to be involved with the habit of giving.

“We have been working with DU Feeds for roughly three years now,” she said. “This act of giving is the start of your transition into your career and your place as a Dominican alum.”

Next year, new members will be referred by current committee members. Students on the committee will select those who represent Dominican and its mission statement.

Lexa Galarza, a junior majoring in neuroscience and current student member of the committee, felt enthusiastic about her role in the group.

“I would definitely recommend undergraduate and graduate students to join the club,” she said. “Not only do you get to be a part of an amazing team, but you get to engage with others at events all the while being resourceful on things needed.”

On April 17, the committee will host a “Day of Giving” from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Lewis Alcove.

Seniors looking for class contributions, events, and other information can be found on committee’s Instagram and website.
