Registration Stress: The Race for the “Perfect” Schedule

By Amanda Barrios

As the spring semester moves from March into April, many students at Dominican University begin preparing for one of the most stressful parts of college life: registration. What should be an exciting opportunity to plan the next semester often becomes a high-pressure race shaped by time slots, course availability, and degree requirements.

For many students, registration day means logging in the moment their assigned time opens, hoping classes don’t fill up within minutes. Required courses, especially those tied to specific majors, can disappear quickly, leaving students scrambling to adjust their plans. This stress is often heightened for underclassmen, who register later and may have fewer options, making it harder to stay on track academically.

Beyond simply getting into classes, students must also think carefully about how to build a manageable schedule. Balancing course difficulty, work commitments, internships, and personal responsibilities adds another layer of pressure. Many students also consider professor teaching styles and course formats, knowing that these factors can significantly impact their success. The desire to create a “perfect” schedule can feel overwhelming, especially when one decision could affect graduation timelines or overall GPA.

Advisors at Dominican University encourage students to plan ahead by reviewing degree requirements and creating multiple schedule options before registration opens. Still, even with preparation, the unpredictability of course demands can make the process frustrating. Students often find themselves refreshing their screens, joining waitlists, or reworking their schedules multiple times before securing a final plan.

Despite these challenges, registration also highlights the resilience and adaptability of Dominican students. Many learn to navigate the system strategically using academic planning tools, seeking guidance from advisors, and connecting with peers for advice. Over time, what initially feels chaotic becomes a shared experience that students bond over.

While registration stress may be unavoidable, it also reflects a deeper commitment among students to take control of their academic journeys. At Dominican University, that determination is evident each semester as students work to build schedules that support their goals, even in the face of limited options and high demand.
