Intramurals Resume After Off-Season

Intramural’s are back at Dominican University with a variety of sports after a two-year-long off-season caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Intramural’s are different this time, according to David Levy, the coordinator of recreational activities and campus athletics.

Students can choose from five different sports — volleyball, soccer, dodgeball, basketball and flag football. Even though volleyball, dodgeball and basketball seasons have already passed, there is still time to sign up for soccer and flag football.

Overall, there has been good participation with 40 people involved in volleyball, 65 for dodgeball and 40 for basketball according to Levy.

There are few requirements to whom students can have on their teams, and co-ed teams are allowed. But in the interest of fairness there are limits on student athletes competing.

Levy has made it clear that he wants teams to be fair. Even if he feels the need to mix up teams to make the leagues competitive, he said he will not be afraid to do so. Students without a team don’t need to worry because they can sign up as free agents and Levy will assign them to a team so they can participate.

Bennett Wogan plays varsity baseball in the spring, and intramural basketball in the winter. He enjoys intramurals but thinks they could benefit from broader student participation.

“I think it’s a lot of fun, and I’m having a great time with it, but I do feel like intramural sports in general at Dominican aren’t very (non-athlete) friendly and cater more towards student athletes,” he said.

“In addition to the sheer joy of playing and competing, intramural athletes may be eligible for prizes,” Levy said.

“T-shirts will always be the base prize but then if I continue to coordinate with other departments adding gift cards and things like that as well,” Levy said. “For one-day tournaments like dodgeball and flag football will be for the gift cards and then the leagues like volleyball and basketball will be more like T-shirts and next year even little trophies.”
