The idea of ice skating without ice seems unrealistic, but students who attended the iceless ice-skating event on Jan. 20 learned how it works.
Dominican’s iceless ice-skating event took place in the Parmer Hall Atrium from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. There were cookies and hot cocoa provided for those who attended.
The event staff from Record-A-Hit, a party equipment business, set everything up. They used PVC, which is a type of plastic, as a replacement for ice and they used barriers to make the rink realistic. It took them three hours to prepare for the event, said the event staff.
The PVC was a nice substitute for ice skating. However, it was not nearly as slick as ice and many people were falling down. Despite this, students and others who attended said they were happy to be there and they stuck around for a while.
The idea for this event came from last year’s Assistant Director of Student Life, Lauren Svendsen. This year Jess Daniels, the student life coordinator, ran the event again as a welcome back from break for students and families.
The reason the student life crew chose ice skating is that there are not many local places to go, but people would still like to skate, says Daniels.
The way the students in attendance heard about the event was through EngageDU or from their friends.
Freshmen Angel Hurtado and Carla Diaz both said they enjoyed skating without ice because it was warm, unlike traditional ice-skating, and they were able to skate when they hadn’t in a long time.
