Fitting into the Fitness Center Schedule

Dominican athletes are displeased about the limited access to the Fitness Center on weekends.

Christian Kalekas, president of Student Government Association (SGA) and baseball player, said the changes to the hours have been “tough” to adjust to.

“During the week, the only time I [get] to lift is from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., and the fitness center is packed,” he explained.

Grayson Downing, graduate student and baseball captain, mentioned how the hours on Saturdays, which occur from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., don’t work well with his schedule.

It’s definitely [been] odd [with the] hours,” he says. “It’s kind of difficult work with, but it’s totally understandable.”

Alex Garcia, a sophomore baseball player, acknowledges the importance of having more hours available on Saturdays.

“Saturdays are our off days from practice,” Garcia explained. “On my off day, I don’t want to get up early to go to the gym. I want to rest, recover properly and then go later in the day.”

Tyler Stibal, athletics coordinator, said that during the last academic year, a report on the fitness center’s weekend hours showed that not a lot of people came to the gym on Saturdays, which is the reason why this year’s Saturday hours have been limited.

“A lot of what I do is dependent on students,” he stated. “If there was such a big push like [having more] hours on Saturday, then it’s something I would do.”

Stibal also mentioned that as of right now, there haven’t been any issues raised this year regarding the fitness center hours on Saturdays.

“With the fitness center, it is definitely possible [to change the hours] simply because it’s just opening it up,” he said.

Aidan Groberski, another sophomore baseball player, said he thinks Saturdays have become a main issue for him.

“I like to sleep in on Saturdays, and then I can’t go work out afterward, so I definitely would talk to Stibal about it,” he said.

The Igini Sports Forum gym is another matter since six intermural teams practice there, leaving a small window for open gym hours.

“Open gym hours are pretty much set as is,” Stibal noted.

Students are urged to reach out to Stibal for more accommodating fitness center hours if they would like more work out hours on Saturdays.

As for the open gym hours, students will have to accept them as it is for now.
