Faculty Senate approves Optional Pass/Fail Grade Option

By Thomas Gibbons

A week ago, a petition was posted by a Dominican University student Jacqueline Ramirez for an Option Pass/Fail Grading Policy. On Monday, DU announced that students will be given the opportunity to elect a Satisfactory/Fail (S/F) grading option for undergraduate courses currently enrolled in for the Spring 2020 semester.

From Kelly M Simmons, University Registrar in an email

Requests will need to be submitted no later than May 1st, 2020. Students are responsible for reaching out to advisor, instructor, or other impacted departments as needed for advice about whether the change to S/F will have a negative impact.  Students must submit a Spring 2020 Change of Grading Basis Request with their advisor’s approval. Students will need to access their DU email account to do so and requests from non-DU emails will not be considered.  Once submitted the student will receive an acknowledgement email confirmation to their DU email from the Office of the Registrar.

If students elect to use the S/F grading option, it will not allow you to improve your GPA. If a failing grade is handed out, attempted not earned credits, it will negatively impact your GPA.
