One of the most exciting things that happen in October is the launching of DU Feeds. DU Feeds is a program that was started to address food scarcity at Dominican. The first initiative since DU Feed was launched is The DU Pop Up Health Market, sponsored by the Student Nutrition and Dietetics Association. This pop-up health market will take place every Wednesday from 10 a.m.– 12 p.m. in the Noonan Reading Room. There will be non -perishable, healthy and nutritious food for all Dominican students in need. The Surplus Food project through the Nutrition Department will have prepackaged meals available at the Market, with extra food from Dining Services when available. The leftover meals will be donated to Beyond Hunger Oak Park the same day.
The second initiative is a DU Feeds Meal Share Program. This program allows students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to donate their meals from their university meal plans and DU Dollars to students in need. There are two forms available on engageDU – one form to donate meals and DU Dollars and the other to request meals. Dean of Students, Norah Collins Pienta, suggested if someone would like to make a monetary donation to help support the efforts of DU Feeds, they would take the donation to Student Accounts and let them know it is for DU Feeds.
The success of this program will be evaluated during a graduate-level nutrition course this semester.
