Dr. Ada Cheng holds a multitude of work and experience as an educator, storyteller, producer, and speaker. She is currently teaching an honors course on scriptwriting in the English department.
Before coming to Dominican, Dr. Cheng was a tenured professor at DePaul University for 15 years, and now she has shifted her focus toward storytelling.
During Dr. Cheng’s time at DePaul, she built a strong understanding with students who represented marginalized groups, like first- and second-generation students, as well as the LGBTQ+ community.
Dr. Cheng stepped into a position where she can inform and teach students within these marginalized groups to utilize their voice through writing, storytelling, and several forms of art.
The importance of one’s voice is critical to Dr. Cheng’s work, and she shares with students a triad of advice.
“Trust yourself, trust your voice, and be okay with taking space; be different,” said Dr. Ada Cheng.
In anticipation of Tuesdays’ lecture, Dr. Cheng shares a message to all attendees that her talk will, “show how we can have productive conversation in a society that may seem pulverized.
How can we develop empathy, sympathy, compassion, and therefore, make the world a better place for all, so we’re not only learning from the intellect, but we learn with our hearts.”
