Study abroad is an opportunity that most students would love to embark on, but it can become difficult for certain majors. No matter what your area of study is, Dominican can help find a program for every major. Everett Krause, bio major and class of 2019 was able to study abroad in the Bahamas while earning class credit for the summer course- Marine and Island Ecology of the Bahama Islands.
This specific program gave Kraus an opportunity to take a classes at the Shedd aquarium before embarking on his trip on a ship cruising through the Bahama islands.
The bigger study abroad programs are usually well advertised through information sessions and meetings but krause assures that there are opportunities out there, you just have to ask. Krause said, “Don’t be content sitting in a class, opportunities like this can open up so many possibilities. Even if it’s just for the experience, it is 1000 percent worth it because it’s an opportunity to get hands-on experience and see the real part of science. I know I will be successful because of courses like this.”
Through DU, partnered with ACCA and the Shedd Aquarium, Krause spent 9 days in The Bahamas during the summer of 2017.
Krause and five other students partook in various hands-on learning opportunities such as assisting with the Shedd’s researching, capture-tag- releasing iguanas, hiking sessions, lectures, and snorkeling excursions.
“Generally everything we learned during the Shedd classes was tested and applied while we were on board. We learned how ecology research was done and got to learn and apply the process of species identification and classification in the water,” said Krause. “If you refuse to be the ‘classroom bio major’ and want to get more information, reach out to your counselors and professors, build relationships, they will help you if Dominican does not have a specific program for you.” Krause urges students to realize the opportunity in front of you. “I have done some incredible stuff and will continue to do incredible stuff as a bio major.”
