Cristal Ortega, Class of 2017, Has Died After a Long Battle with Cancer

By Thomas Gibbons

Dominican University Alumna, Cristal Ortega, passed away last Sunday after a long fought battle with cancer.

In 2017, the Dominican Star did a story on Ortega about her incredible feat of cycling 4,500 miles across the United States. After completing her treatment, Ortega biked from Baltimore to San Francisco in 70 days to raise money for young adults impacted by cancer. Check out the full story here.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Cristal’s entire family, and to all of the Dominican University faculty, staff, students and alumnae/i who supported her in her journey.  In this time of mourning, we hold one another in prayer and draw upon the caritas of the Dominican community which we know Cristal herself felt. – Claire Noonan, Vice President of Mission and Ministry at Dominican University
