By: Angel Dominguez

This summer, Chris Rice, a senior and graphic design major at Dominican traveled to New York City for a summer internship at the headquarters of Major League Baseball.

Chris is a senior at Dominican, he credits his love for graphic design towards his interest in technology at a young age. Chris remembers always being keen on learning and developing skills, especially through the use of technology.

When asked about some interests and hobbies of his outside of graphic design, Chris mentioned his interest in sports. He admits that being a sports fanatic also sparked his interest in applying for the MLB internship over the summer.

Chris’s skills and vision in design has made him a standout as a sport’s graphic designer, he states that his creativity and dedication has been critical to improving his work in design.

Rice expressed his thoughts on applying for the highly competitive internship implying that he didn’t expect to be accepted and didn’t anticipate much of a reply.

So, when they called back with the acceptance, he recalled the moment as surreal for himself and his family.

Given that the internship was set in New York City, Chris packed his bags and headed towards the east coast for several weeks. Here he interned as a digital content designer, the internship program totaled around 130 interns.

Chris joined a specific department within the headquarters that was appointed to do digital content work for the MLB website. His team worked on numerous tasks set by other departments across the office through the use of ASANA interface.

Rice looks back on his time here and explains how, “that experience was crucial, it definitely excited me that I can go work for Major League Baseball, NBA, or any sport organization”, said Chris Rice.

He mentioned that like most newcomers he too was lost in the subway system but mentions that his time living and working in Midtown Manhattan was great and something he hoped to experience before graduating.

When asked about his passion and motivation for graphic design, Chris answered that his favorite thing about graphic design is the ability to curate your own message into something visually both for yourself and the client.

“Although usually you’re doing work for someone else, you’re the piece in the middle before it gets done, and eventually you’ll add your own spice to it.”

Chris enters this fall semester and has shared his motivations on the design goals he has set for himself as well as graduating next year.
