Illinois Midterm Recap

Mid-term results are in after a heated race for Governor, House, Senate, and more in the United States.

Democrat J.B. Pritzker has won over current governor Bruce Rauner, whom conceded after results showed 55 percent to Pritzker over Rauner’s 38 percent of votes with 6 percent for Conservative Sam McCann and Libertarian Grayson “Kash” Jackson. Rauner has been governor since 2015.

During his victory speech, Pritzker focused on people of color, young people and women. “In Illinois, we have a history of building ourselves up from broken places and the bonds and the bonds we form in the process become the steel garters that hold us all together.” He said, “I see those bonds in all across the state of Illinois.”

Other offcials whom were voted in were democrat Kwame Raul for Illinois Attorney General. Democrats Jesse White, Michael Frerichs, and Susana Mendoza were all re-elected for their positions.

The house mostly stayed the same except for district six (which includes parts of Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kane and DuPage County), which switched fromrepublicantodemocratic.District 14 had the closest race with 50.8% for Democrat Lauren Underwood over a 49.2% for Randy Hultgren.

Out of the 18 seats for the Illinois representatives, 13 of them either stayed or turned Democratic and five has stayed republican.

After the elections, students feel positive about the results. Junior Alondra Castillo said, “Comparing the midterm elections to the presidential elections, I would say that they went great. Although there were many attempts to systematically sabotage voting, more people where are of what their vote meant. That’s why we got the results we did.”

Diversity became the big winner of Tuesday’s as more women, LGBTQ+ people of color took office. “These o cials get our government closer to accurately representing the diversity of the American People.” Sophmore Caitlin Moran said.
