The purpose of college is to prepare students for the workforce, but what really happens when you graduate and are thrust into it? No more nap times, no more extensions on papers and definitely no more rolling out of bed and going straight to class in the clothes you slept in!
The spring is the time of year when upperclassmen are applying for full-time jobs and underclassmen are applying for internships, meaning everyone should be looking their best to head into an interview as polished as they can.
Beyond taking on more responsibility, entering your career of choice also means altering your wardrobe for a more professional lifestyle. However, this doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your personality for a more sophisticated look. Now more than ever, personal style may be even more important in the workplace, especially if it makes you stand out as unique yet well put-together.
Katie Kramer, assistant director in the Office of Student Involvement at Dominican, shares her advice for workplace attire.
Q: Describe your personal style.
A: Feminine and classic with clean lines.
Q: What is your go-to outfit for a day in the office?
A: In the summer, I wear a lot of dresses to work because it’s just one piece and it’s easy to put together. When it’s cooler, skirts and tights.
Q: Where is your favorite place to shop for professional attire?
A: I really like the British catalogue, Boden USA. I also buy a lot of dresses from Von Maur.
Q: What factors do you consider when purchasing clothing?
A: Whether I feel good in it and look good in it is paramount. Quality is just as important as price for me. I love things that make me smile and are fun.
Q: What style advice do you have for those who will be graduating and working full-time?
A: When dressing for work, you have to figure out who you want to be as a professional and how you want to present yourself at work. Your style should follow the setting at work and what your job involves. For example, don’t wear heels if you’re running around all day.
Q: Why is it important to show your personal style at work?
A: I think it’s important to use your fashion sense to show your personality. Looking nice at work gives people an idea of who you are based on your style and it makes you feel better about yourself. When I am wearing fun clothes, I feel better about myself. It’s fun when you wear something fun because it becomes a connection between co-workers.
Q: What is the key to being fashionable in a professional setting?
A: I think comfort is key because you need to be comfortable to be confident with your work. Keeping in mind what kind of setting you work in, you want to stand out and show your personal style.
