Women’s volleyball dominates in conference opener, not so in tournament

The women’s volleyball team opened their conference play with a convincing 3-1 victory over the visiting Aurora University Spartans.  The Stars won the first two sets before dropping the third, but ultimately claimed the fourth set to stave off the Spartans.  Led by senior Claire Dezelski (15 kills, 15 digs) and sophomore Caitlen Foote, (10 kills, 24 digs), the Stars halted the Spartan advance shortly after it started.

The stars weren’t as aligned for the women’s volleyball team during their Carthage College trip to Kenosha, Wisconsin. The stars stumbled on the road, going 1-3 with their lone win coming against University Wisconsin-Platteville. The Stars look to rebound against Rockford University on September 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Igini Sports Forum.

Men’s soccer suffers first losing streak in four years

The men’s soccer team dropped their first game of the year on last Wednesday, falling 2-1 to the Elmhurst College Bluejays.  Despite battling back after falling behind 2-0, the Stars would succumb to Elmhurst 2-1.  The Stars outshot the Bluejays 25-9, but could not put the equalizing goal past the Bluejays goalkeeper.  Senior Robbie Baird earned the lone tally for Dominican, rifling a shot past the keeper from just outside the 18-yard box.

The Stars sought to batten down the hatches against the Hope College Flying Dutchmen but they failed to turn the tide, losing 3-0 on Saturday. The Dutchmen defense kept the Stars offense in check, outshooting the Stars 21-11. The loss marks the Stars first multi-game losing streak since the 2008-2009 season, where they lost to North Park University and Wheaton College.

Women’s tennis rolls past Rockford

The Dominican University women’s tennis team (2-5, 2-3 NACC) rolled past the Rockford College Regents 8-1 to capture their second victory on the season.  Freshman Megan Hickey and sophomore Natalie Bestler, the Stars number two doubles team, bolstered their conference record to 4-2 in the match and helped lead the way to victory.

Stars out shone by Maroons and undefeated Spartans

The women’s soccer team fell to the visiting University of Chicago Maroons 5-2.  Although the Stars fell behind early, 2-0, they rallied back behind goals from freshman Ashly Torres and junior Leah Tednes to tie the score at 2-2.  It was a valiant effort, but the Maroons would notch a trio of late goals to overcome the Stars 5-2.

The Stars looked for their first win against the undefeated Dubuque Iowa Spartans but got lost along the way, narrowly losing 1-0. Sophomore goalie Sara Stepanovich put in a Spartan effort, stopping seven of eight shots. Stepanovich and the Stars defense faced an onslaught of pressure, being outshot 26-6 while also only having two corner kicks to the Spartans 15. The Stars seek their first win against North park University on September 18 in the Vikings home turf.
