Men’s Volleyball falls short in MCVL semifinal playoff game

The 15th ranked Dominican University Men’s Volleyball team lost in the semifinals of the inaugural Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League conference tournament to Mount St. Joseph in a tightly contested match that saw the two teams play all five sets.

The Mount St. Joseph Lions took the first set from the Stars by a score of 25-19. The Stars then rallied back to take the second set from the Lions by a score 28-25. The teams traded victories in the next two sets with the Lions taking the third set and the Stars taking the fourth. The 12th ranked Lions outlasted the Stars in the decisive fifth set 15-9. With the victory, the Lions will advance to the finals of the MCVL tournament to face off against Carthage College.

Freshman Brad McFarland smashed 14 kills for the Stars while also adding 2 blocks. Sophomores Aidan Spangler and Mason Solbrig also contributed 9 kills of their own while each collected 5 blocks. Sophomore Alex Coyne delivered 46 assists for the Stars as he continued his strong season in that department. Coyne ranks third on the MCVL conference leader boards with a total of 1,011 assists on the season.

The loss drops the Stars to an overall record of 15-11 for the season. The team had a strong season in just their second full season as a program. The Stars finished with a 10-4 record in conference play and paced the conference with a strong .259 hitting percentage. However, it is a waiting game now as they eagerly anticipate the NCAA division III bid.
