New varsity sport to be added

Dominican currently participates in 12 varsity sports – the announcement of the addition of men’s volleyball brings the total up to 13. The team will begin competing in Spring 2014, headed by Dan Ames, who was announced as head coach on Oct. 24.

Ames has been assistant women’s volleyball coach since 2009. He served as head coach of the Lewis University Fliers Volleyball Club Juniors program from 2002-2004. In addition to his work with universities, Ames owns two volleyball clubs.

 

Women’s soccer snaps losing streak against Rockford College

Heading into the Oct. 23rd conference regular season finale against Rockford College, the women’s soccer team had slid into a 4 game losing streak. These losses, including conference defeats at the hands of Milwaukee School of Engineering (0-2), Aurora University (0-2) and Concordia University Wisconsin (1-6), put the Stars at a 6-5 record in NAC conference play heading into the clash against Rockford College.

The game, played on West Campus Field, saw Dominican snap its losing streak through a blowout victory. The win, a 13-0 triumph, put the Stars at a 7-5 final NAC record and brought the team a sixth seeded spot in the NAC tournament.

Junior Kelly Petty netted four times in the win, freshman Laura Yonke, senior Jen Russ and sophomore Leah Tednes contributed two goals apiece, with freshman Taylor Adler, senior Jessie Rosales and sophomore Jessica Perri scoring single goals to round out the scoring. Freshmen Sara Stepanovich and Allie Wagner split time in goal, combining to earn a shutout.

 

Women’s volleyball wraps up season on positive note

The Dominican University women’s volleyball team took to the court for the final regular season game on Oct. 24, taking on Rockford College. The Stars won in straight sets (25-15, 25-12, 25-15), collecting their 10th win against NAC opponents on the season. This victory came on the heels of a loss to Benedictine University in four sets (1-3) on Oct. 20, the Star’s second NAC loss of the season.

Senior Jacy Lawrence led the team with 14 kills, freshman Christina Wilson tallied 22 assists, and senior Liz Yakey came up with ten digs.

Dominican enters the 2012 NAC Women’s Volleyball Tournament as the third seed. The Stars will welcome Marian University to campus on Oct. 30. Dominican last played Marian on Oct. 6, when the team travelled to Fond du Lac and won 3-1. The winner will go on to play the winner of Wisconsin Lutheran and Benedictine.
