Dominican students give their opinions on the lack of diversity in faculty and staff:

“It’s important to have diversity amongst sta /faculty because it gives students someone to relate to in higher education. Diversity amongst our institutions allows us to be exposed to di erent backgrounds and allows us to learn from these individuals. If more diversity was implemented into our education, we can learn more about other peoples history, not just the winning side”

-Isaac Moor, 21, Natural Science major

“It’s important to have more representation of people of di erent backgrounds because people can relate to them. Seeing people that are similar to you can be inspiring. It’s a nice feeling when you look around and see people similar to you being successful. Motivation and pride comes a long way and we can only see more diversity in faculty and staff having positive effects on students.”

-OLA (Organizations of Latin American Students)

“Learning from Afro american gures gives us perspective of knowledge that is not taught in traditional books. The more different cultural backgrounds we come from the more the more we can learn from each other and grow and be happier experience new things.”

-Luisa Leon, 25, Biology major

“Minority students believe that the sta /faculty of color would be more understanding since they might of have gone through similar experiences. Since students see the similarities in experiences and the accomplishments of the faculty and staff of color, then students will feel inspired to keep pursuing their goals.”

-Gloria Gervacio, 20, Neuroscience major

“When it comes to college a lot of people of color don’t feel they identify with their school because of lack of diversity. Adding sta they could identify with could make a big difference in retention rates.”

-Angel Cordero, 20, Political Science major

“When there is more diversity in sta and faculty, students have the opportunity to coexist with people of distinct backgrounds. I would personally love to see more people on campus that I connect with my language, culture, etc.”

-Veronica Castro, 20, Spanish major

“There should be more people of color on faculty/ staff because black students need to feel there are people who have been where they are now that can understand their struggles.”
