Retail Theft Arrest

On Feb. 12, at 3:50 p.m. officers responded to an in progress Retail Theft at Jewel Foods, 7525 W. Lake. The offender fled on foot and was taken into custody by responding officers. The subject James M. Slovinec, 32, of Chicago, stole two bottles of Grey Goose Vodka valued at $55. Slovinec was transported to the station and processed. Due to a prior Felony Retail Theft conviction in 2010, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved one count of Felony Retail Theft for Slovinec.    

Possession of Cannabis/Obstructing a Police Officer Arrest

On Feb. 13, at 3:18 p.m., an officer observed a vehicle traveling eastbound on the 7800 block of Madison at a high speed. The radar confirmed that the vehicle was traveling 44 mph in a 25 mph zone. The passenger was throwing several small items out of the window, while the officer conducted a traffic stop. Further investigation revealed that the passenger Sergio Salgado, 18, of Melrose Park had thrown six small plastic bags that contained a total of 11.2 grams of cannabis. Salgado was taken into custody and charged with Misdemeanor Possession of Cannabis and Obstructing a Police Officer.      

Residential Burglary Report

On Feb. 14, at 12:34 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Thatcher to reference a Residential Burglary. The resident related that, sometime between February 11-14, unknown offenders entered his residence and removed cellphones, gift cards, a laptop and a camera. The offenders entered by breaking a window. The total loss was valued at over $1,400. The Detective Unit is currently investigating the matter.      

Aggravated DUI Arrest

On Feb. 15, at 8:02 p.m., officers were dispatched to Harlem and Division for a traffic accident. The driver of one of the vehicles refused to put his car in park and exit the car, and then proceeded to lock his doors. The driver exhibited indicators of intoxication. The passenger window was broken and the driver was escorted out of the car. The driver Johnathon M. Abraham, 30, of Chicago was transported to the hospital for evaluation and for a DUI kit. Abraham refused to submit a DUI kit at the hospital and was subsequently transported to the station. Further investigation revealed that Abraham had open alcohol in his car and that his driver’s license was suspended for a previous DUI conviction. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Felony Review Unit was contacted and approved Aggravated DUI charges along with Driving with a suspended License and several other traffic violations.       

Burglary from Motor Vehicle Report

On Feb. 18, at 7:52 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 1500 block of Ashland for a Burglary to Auto incident. The victim related that an unknown offender entered his unlocked vehicle and removed a laptop worth $620 and business checks. The Detective Unit is currently investigating the incident.

Retail Theft Arrest

On Feb. 20, at 7:19 p.m., officers were dispatched to 7525 W. Lake, Jewel Foods, for a Retail Theft in progress. The offender had fled into Forest Park on foot. The subject was located and taken into custody. The offender Brian R. Chaplin, 29, of Forest Park had stolen $65 worth of liquor. Chaplin was charged with Retail Theft, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Resisting Arrest.    

Damage/Theft of Village Property Report

On Feb. 22, at 10:02 a.m., an officer was dispatched to Augusta and Jackson to reference a missing pedestrian crossing sign. A broken fastening bolt was found on the ground close to where the sign had been located. It was unknown at the time of the report whether or not the sign had sustained damage during a recent wind storm or had actually been stolen. A police report was generated to document the incident.
