Unlawful Use of a Weapon/Hit and Run Theft Arrest- On April 7 at 4:18 a.m., officers responded to the 7500 block of North Ave. for a report of hit and run. Once on scene, officers noticed that one vehicle had left the roadway and struck several trees and poles. The second vehicle involved in the accident, had fled the scene eastbound. According to the report, officers learned four occupants had fled from the vehicle. One occupant, 18 year-old John Benitez, of 1662 N. 43rd Ave. in Stone Park, was found and transported to the hospital for his injuries. Officers recovered a loaded handgun and shell casings from another weapon in the damaged vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the incident stemmed from a gang-related disturbance in Stone Park, in which several shots were exchanged between rival gang members. After that incident, the two groups chased each other eastbound on North Ave. out of Stone Park, eventually crashing on the 7500 block of North Ave. The driver of the damaged vehicle, 19-year-old Ivan Marchan, of 1435 N. Morris Ave. in Berkeley, turned himself over to River Forest Police several hours later. Benitez was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and possessing a non-valid firearms owner’s identification card and other traffic offenses. Both have pending court dates in May in the 4th district courthouse.
Locker Room Theft- On April 5 at 7:55 p.m., officers responded to Concordia University, 7400 Augusta, when a complainant related that someone removed clothes and electronics from a secured locker room in the Geisman Gymnasium. The theft is under investigation.

 

Battery Report- On April 3 at 7:04 p.m., an officer responded to a delayed battery report at Concordia University, 7400 Augusta. According to the police report, the victim stated that she was approached and battered while walking near Gross Hall. The offender was described as male, 6’1,” husky build and possibly around 30-years of age. The victim sustained minor injuries and the incident is under investigation.

Employee Theft- On April 2 at 3:08 p.m., officers responded to PetCo, 7265 W. Lake St., for a supposed internal employee theft investigation. The employee, 20-year-old Christian Ruiz, of 5041 W. 23 Place on Cicero, was charged with felony theft of $3,531.40 worth of fraudulent credit card transactions.
